Day Off

Bangkok. We were warned of unruly protests in town today, but Al's ortho appt was on outskirts of downtown, so we went ahead with our plans & didn't see anything except extra security on the streets

11... going on 17.

Happy Birthday to my Mom.  Today would have been number 62.

I'm living a strange inverse existence.  The more wonderful things & places I get to share, do and explore with my girls in this beautiful world, the more sad & mad I am that my Mom was robbed of nearly every worthy experience of motherhood.  A dark place in my heart aches for her for all that she missed.

Thank heavens for the bright spots that are little girls.  This morning mine stepped into a much deserved 4-day weekend... Happy Makha Bucha Day on Monday, a Buddhist holiday of repentance & purification.  Rob's working all weekend, so it's just us ladies. Went to Bangkok today for ortho appt, and made a day of it in the city by going to the rooftop water park & the mall housing her dental office.  Their friend Maria from Brazil came along and we all had a grand time. I adore our time with kids from different locales. After the water park, we lazed about an English bookstore.  Even swung into a movie theatre just for the popcorn (Maria's idea), one of those things I've often wanted to do, but had never done.  Today we did.

As Ry beamed on our return home, "Today was such a happy day."  It was.  And it wasn't.  But it absolutely was.

Date Night

Patiently waiting for my Man-tra

Allie snapped a couple pics before our lovely anniversary eve... grilled snowfish with a Japanese flair is highly recommended, as are nights out sans enfants

Smiles

My Dad & Darlene adopted a mama & baby elephant for a day in Chiang Mai, their favorite experience during 3 week visit

And Riley's favorite. She couldn't wait to show us the date she'd recently had with Rob. Actually, at dinner the other night, my Dad asked what was her favorite thing that she's seen while living in Thailand. With a smile & not a second of hesitation she tells him, "Seeing you here." That's Mei-chan.

We all agreed it does seem to help a bit... very soft feet for a few days

This could be the A&W with the chain's best view in the world

Allie with Khun Sak. She's loving lessons, as they're more mind stimulating than swimming laps

Found a tulip for Ry this week to celebrate Holland's newest designation, 2nd Happiest Town in America. We're happy it's our home

Not a TV watcher, but the Olympics suck me in. Bought a bunch of silk in a village near Cambodian border during Christmas trip. It's been calling me, so I'm hand sewing pillows & tackling some mending while spectating sport. Ry keeps telling me that she & I will come back here to pick out silk for her wedding gown that I will sew for her when she's engaged someday.

2 years ago, St. Anton, Austria, our 11th wedding anniversary. Gosh, I miss snow. While watching Olympic events last week, I could almost feel my frozen toes snowboard cross to glory.

My Dad & Dar left last night for flights home. So glad for a little time with him this month. Short & sweet because of all the venturing out they did, but glad to see them navigating so well on their own, Tammy beams with pride. The girls enjoyed hearing my Dad call me Tammy again. It's been a while, and he is about the only one in the world who can get away with it.

A lot going on, but not much excitingly Thai. Heavy into work & school. Allie's world is school projects and tennis... group play once a week and privates twice.  I took my Valentine to the Pattaya Open Semi-finals last weekend, watched world #9 Vera Zvonareva, great time.  Hot afternoon sun crept into our covered seats, but court was positioned on the sea, so terrific breezes & views helped us tolerate the sweat.  Even sitting in semi-shaded seats, we were as soaked as the players. Gross.

During our lovely tennis date, Rob & Ry had Valentine A&W floats and fishy foot massages.  She loved it. Dangle feet in fish tanks for a half hour while they nibble off dead skin.  Gross. This weekend Ry insisted we take my Dad & Darlene. My Dad giggled like a 7-year old, and Ry's mission was accomplished.

I'm helping often at the girls' school library.  Getting ready for a new card catalog system, woo-hoo!  I'm truly loving it there and more seriously pondering career options in library science.

Random question... what do you think of a hospital that has McDonald's in its lobby?  Allie's friend has been a pretty sick girl here, but has had lots of McD while being treated by MDs   Doesn't quite seem right, but then I guess happiness & such meals can heal.

Rob & I are about to celebrate a baker's dozen tonight. Sitter for the girls & dinner for us at Mantra.  I must share my groom with a baker's dozen of his colleagues, but so it goes. Mantra dinner is always special, and it is time with my love. Hope we at least sit together :-)

Some thought it may not last when we returned with surprise from tying the knot on our own in Venezuela. I said vows in my handmade dress of the silk shantung Rob brought me from his first Thai adventure in college. We were babies. But here we are today, together even when we're not, and enjoying our landscape of love. Mt. Fuji, Pico Bolivar, a mountain of parenthood with two spunky girls, rocky mountain highs, death's valleys, a tour de France, Alps, tropics, and a little house in the big woods on the shores of a Great Lake in the 2nd happiest town in America... I can't help but smile.

International Day

Assembling for parade of nations at school

Our little USA

Les Miserables... she is now the only student left from France

The little German is our neighbor... so darn cute, they all were

Lots of kids at school are half this & half that. Ry made her flag USA on one side & Netherlands on the other. "I'm half Dutch," she's been telling everyone at school, not quite agreeing with concept of heritage vs. citizenship. "My name is Dutch, I've been there and have met my family there, I live in Holland..."  Non-Americans do get confused when they hear we're from Holland. If she can speak Dutch next year, they'll let her carry their flag in the parade

Surfin USA, drummer & plaid shorts surfer girl are ours

Headmaster on lead vocals, only one old enough to know the words

Thai dance

Korean Tae Kwan Do dance

Korean folksong

Neighbors to the north, mostly teachers

So adorable

Japanese Kabuki dance. Al's sensei is in dark robe, a dynamic teacher & favorite class

Al's good friend Reishmi is tallest in back, gorgeous Indian dancing

Thai bamboo dance

A creative mom (not me) designed this table decoration for lunch. The international feast was AMAZING

After performances, middle & high school joined up for international field games. Waterballoon volleyball was a hit

Al's in plaid shorts, her team won the games & a future pizza party

Hot day, brought friends home to the pool

Girls with Fern & Maria, also on Ry's soccer team

Ry had her first game here last week. ISE's team was down a player (stinkin swine flu), but another school loaned one to us. Lost the first game, won the second

"I've got the ball, now what do I do?"

She'd rather play goalie & takes it very seriously. Down on herself for letting one get by in first game, but proud of goal tending entire second shutout game

Hot, a sunny 90+ at 5pm

Another busy week & weekend.  Have a sitter & going out tomorrow night with some guy named Rob and dinner by the sea.

We're planning Valentine breakfast with girls Saturday morn while we watch Olympic opening ceremonies & parade of nations. 16 years ago this weekend I blew out my knee skiing in Traverse, and we took in Olympic opening festivities with ice packs & room service instead of fancy dinner out. Memories...

Grandpa Arrived

Grandpa & Darlene

I was tree-ed

Sanctuary of Truth, massive temple carved entirely of wood

Decades of intricate carvings are amazingly positioned just meters from the sea, salt & tsunamis

Construction began in 1981 & won't be complete till 2025

Wonder what she's thinking

Anatomy of a kiss

Lunch by the sea, tide was out

Tom Yom, SamTam with seabass, chicken wings for girls

Horseshoe crab? We declined

My Dad & Darlene arrived Friday night! Saturday morning pickup from Bangkok, stayed with us 3 nights, and now already gone. They flew north today for mountains & elephant trekking in Chiang Mai, then beaching & kayaking down in the Phi Phi Islands.  We'll see them again in about 11 days.  A bit flight weary, but they're troopers... and diving into the food.

International Day at school tomorrow.  Surfin USA for the Yankees. Our drummer has swine flu, so Ry volunteered to fill in with the all boy band.  I'm recounting my Yamaha days & giving her drum lessons tonight.  Ha.

Besides burgers, dogs, chili, dressed turkey & apple pie, what is American food?  It's tough coming up with "American dishes" for events like this. If you have good ideas, enlighten me.  In the beach theme, I'm making all-American potato salad.  Looking forward to what the world shares. Feel like I should be offering more than potato salad.

Time to help decorate a surf board, you tube Dennis Wilson & slice up some spuds.
